White two move and mate in two.

1. Rh7 a4 or b4 2.Ra7#

After Rh7,b7 is forced. It blocks the rook journey to a7 and you cannot mate on the second move.

b7 is an illegal move. Blacks pawns must move toward a1/b1.

Black pawns promote up and I am saying b7 after Rh7

Blacks pawns start from the 7th rank heading towards the 1st rank. They do not go back to the 7th rank. You have something turned around in your head. It happens. happy (look at the numbers on the board, you are viewing it from whites perspective)

You put up the board upside down. If you put up the board right, there is no Rh7 move, as the rook sits on a3.

There is a solution even with the board set up right, and it's more interesting.

Ra2 and if black does anything, Rh2#

There is a two move mate, but you di not find it. 1.Ra2+ Black is forced to play g2. Now the pawn is in the way and 2.Rh2 cannot be played. If 2. Rxg2 Black is not in check and is unable to move, Stalemate! Keep looking.

It is not stalemate.Black plays g3.

The original version (mirrored but that doesn't change anything) was published in Ilustração Brasileira in 1878 by Arthur Napoleão dos Santos.

You are correct!

Can you say?

You would like me to provide the answer tornedo?

Avatar of chesstornedo

OK.The answer is Bb3!. After the forced g2, any bishop move is a check. But the move Be6#! pinning the g4 pawn is winning.

Yes, this is what I found. I missed the castle on your 8 move mate with the string of pawns in a different post. There is a site which shows available castling rights. Wish that feature was more widely used.
