It seems to me that if you are playing that type of game, with those types of rules, that promote to those types of pieces, then wouldn't that actually be a very easy checkmate and not a hard one at all?

I think everyone recognized it was not a traditional board. There was just no mention of odd pieces moving in odd ways. But if someone was familiar with such a game with those rules, it seems like it would be very easy. Similar to this.
