new puzzle scoring system

The answer is simple: money. Happy content people feeling deserving of their ratings don't have to prove themselves constantly by doing a lot of puzzles. Frustrated miserable people trying to prove their worth because they are not getting as high rated puzzles as their rating will put their time & energy into getting a better rating just to prove their worth, but it doesn't help. Same with diet pills, people happy with their weight no matter what it is don't buy diet pills. Miserable people buy those. And keep buying because the weight comes back otherwise. I say rather fix happiness first. Don't fall for marketing tricks. But yeah old system was better.

My dream in studying at university was to go work in marketing. I thought it would be a dream job for someone with visual skills. I got to work for a big company. The job turned out to have no soul and people dropping off one by one because of burnouts. And a lot of office drama too. It's a dog eat dog world where money talks. It was not for me. But I still see when marketing tactics are being used. This case seems pretty clear. But I hope they grow back some souls and return the old system.

Everyone frustrated with puzzles right now: I suggest switching into completing lessons. Those can be challenging too & you constantly learn new stuff instead of getting repetitive challenges. It's not as addictive because it doesn't give you visible points after every lesson. But you can check out in friends leaderboard for example how much points you have once in a while. So the dopamine levels stay balanced instead of up & down. There's no annoying minus points either. There's so many lessons available even after completing beginner, intermediate and advanced. I'm still going trough advanced ones. Lessons have been super helpful to be better at games.

Repeat after me: "I am worthy, I am deserving, I have already done enough" and ommm.... Feel that in your heart and soul and stop falling into marketing tricks. Move onto actually useful things. Make sure you have joy in what you are doing instead of frustration, anger and rage. Make sure you have balance. When you control your nerves you will play better. When you feel frustrated and angry you will fail no matter what you do. You might get lucky sometimes but it doesn't last. Peace of mind is worth everything. Take care of yourself!

How do like the new scoring system for puzzles where you you get 5 points for a solve and minus 24 for wrong?

I hate it

After several years of dedicated daily puzzle solving I moved on. The new scoring system is ridiculous and ruined any excitement I had towards the daily challenge of leveling up. I moved on to Lichess for my puzzles. Not as addicting as the old chess.com system but still a good daily diversion.

I sometimes lose -32 points. Meaning I need to get 7 puzzles right in a row to get a net of +3 points. It’s ridiculous honestly….

I find it surprising that the devs changed a well-working system into something that feels more like the trial protect of your engineering intern. I have been a gold member for many years now, but if this puzzle system is remains, this platform is just not for me anymore. Very unfortunate because I like many of the features and use them on my ChessUp as well, but it honestly feels like there exists no quality control whatsoever…

This new rating system is grossly unfair. Getting nicked -27 points for making the wrong move (according to them) on a difficult puzzle without any clue has to the objective, . are we checkmating, gaining pieces, or avoiding a checkmate? Giving an objective/goal is not a hint. It merely states the intention. So if we're going to get punished harshly for wrong moves, then at least give us the goal. One time, I played a puzzle that clearly had two means of checkmating, but I chose the wrong method and was nicked -26 points. Totally unfair!

I just noticed this as well! That penalty seems a bit steep but it sure sat me up and made me play more carefully, so that's a good habit to get into anyway!

don't like only getting 5 points and losing big after making a few good moves - the gains and losses should be more comparable

I like my puzzles because they are great for me

Translated srbsilva said: "It gets even harder."

That is discouraging! I puzzled for two days and I'm up only ONE point. hahahah! I'm trying to remain positive but, even though I learn a great deal regardless, it makes me feel deflated and I found myself today avoiding puzzles completely. sad

Translated my response for srbsilva:

Isso é desanimador. Fiquei quebra-cabeças por dois dias e só ganhei UM ponto. hahahah! Estou tentando permanecer positivo, mas, mesmo aprendendo muito, isso me deixa desanimado e hoje me peguei evitando quebra-cabeças completamente.

This new scoring system is ridiculous. Last year I did a lot of increasingly hard puzzles here, stabilizing at a puzzle rating of 3800. A week ago I came back, and now I get trivial mate in one or mate in two puzzles. Today I changed my setting to "very hard", but this did not improve a lot, I still got very easy puzzles, although the first one was at least not an immediate mate anymore. I spend half a minute looking for hidden traps, but there were none, and the "hard" puzzle is rated 430 .

Greetings,

Unfortunately, I have been in this same situation since September 30. Suddenly, after giving me a puzzle with a rating of 2600, the system started giving me puzzles rated 300 to 450. They were/are still simple checkmates in 1, 2, or 3 moves. I immediately changed the settings and set the level to “difficult/hard,” but the system continues to give me puzzles with the same rating meh. It's quite disappointing not to be able to do challenging puzzles or get more than 5 points.

Every day I check the settings and they are correct (difficult), but the system continues to show me these ridiculous puzzles when before it offered me puzzles rated 3400, 3600, or even some rated 3800.

This is a bug, and it should be fixed. Otherwise, we will have to go elsewhere to practice tactics and improve our calculation skills. Something that is impossible to do here nowadays.

To me it looks like our puzzle ratings were internally reset to 400, although this was not visible on the stats page, and therefore we got these ridiculously trivial puzzles. For me the situation has resolved over time, after setting my difficulty level to "extra hard" the difficulty of the puzzles started to increase, albeit very slowly. Under the new system I am rated 2700, and while I think I have not reached my peak yet, my solving time on the "hard" difficulty level is well above average now.

Unfortunately you seem to be stuck at a very low rating, and as the app limits you to three puzzles per day (on a browser you can do five) it might take a few months before you get where you belong. But there are plenty of other sites which let you do an unlimited amount of puzzles.

To be fair I do not know what the fuss is. Yeah, I dropped from 3300 to 2000, but I think that figure is now more meaningful and reflective of the skill rather than just a number. I have not yet done lot of puzzles, but at standard setting I seem to get +2 to +3 for solving standard puzzles and get still smacked hard for making a mistake. the +5 was essentially infinite rating glitz. Now to get ahead you need to really be able to solve puzzles better, not just grind a rating.

I have looked at other profiles and found people whose scores have not changed at all, others who have lost between 300 and 500 points, and others whose scores have dropped between 800 and 1200 points. None were reset to 400 (I haven't seen a profile like mine!) and certainly none did ridiculous puzzles with a rating below 1000-1700 in the days leading up to 9 October or afterwards. I, on the other hand, have been unfairly robbed of almost 31,000 points, and even though I have the settings on extra hard, all the puzzles are mate in 1 and do not exceed a rating of 700 or so.

I know, as I said in my previous comment, that there are other sites. But that does not solve the problem of how arbitrary and unfair this change is. Once again, they are showing their biased criteria, with arguments that do not hold water, while destroying our daily work and effort without caring in the slightest.

It looks like there is a bug with the new target times.

It appears the target times have been increased on the lower rated puzzles -- on many of the easy puzzles, for example, the target times was increased from 4 seconds to 11 seconds. However, the speed bonus appears to still be based on the older times. Here's a screenshot where I solved a puzzle with a target time of 11 seconds -- it took me 6 seconds but I only got a speed bonus of 95%.

I am not 100% sure, but I think speed bonus has been removed completely. The target times have been removed from our puzzle stat pages a few weeks ago, before the new rating system went live.

Note that your screenshot shows stale data for the puzzle rating, pass rate and number of attempts as well, I have complained about that two days ago.
