... but can you implement this idea with no more than two knights? Then please post it!

Does 1 Rxd3 work too? Looking for Rc3, Na7 Rc8#

I must admit I never saw this variation but I did engine-test the problem. Problem-composing in the 21st century is so different from the 20th century!

1. Rxd3? exd5! 2. Rc3 (or Na7) d4!

I have made a position with less then three Knights ,  but with a different idea.

I can set it with just two knights, but it's of no real use: white will have two light-squared bishops. Just replace the f1 knight with a bishop, and the main variation is still OK...

Arisktotle

Yes! I considered this setup but decided that 3 knights are better than 2 light-squared bishops. I liked the mating position more with only knights and pawns on the board. But that is just a matter of taste. I'm afraid I'll need to make dramatic changes to get rid of promoted pieces. This version does not comply with composition conventions but I liked it too much to completely let it go. This forum seems an appropriate final resting place for it.

I wouldn't call this a good end game. Sometimes its better to resign and open the valuable spare time to some better games and not sticking to strange and unreal endgames scenerarios.

You are confused.

This is not the Endgame forum but the Puzzle forum. It facilitates all puzzles that are not endgames.

Also, this is not a Game forum. It contains no games though it will contain some puzzles taken from games; quite often they are inferior puzzles.

The position actually serves as a good retro challenge...

I cannot see any setup without a promoted piece, sorry.

Maybe it's possible, but the problem will need a total rebuild, and I don't have enough time for that right now.

I would be scorned posting a diagram with fiftupled pawns. So much better to see the pillar arise naturally.
