1- I wouldn't call it crappy. OTB your opponent won't always respond with the best continuation, so you should always be ready to capitalize.

2- The forced Mate after Qxe1 is actually pretty sweet 😁

Absolute nonsense. A game is a game and a puzzle is a puzzle. If a puzzle were a game it would be called a game and not a puzzle. People do stupid things in games because they are stupid and they are entitled to do that. An incorrect puzzle is the same as a greedy philantropist. It is a contracdiction. Puzzles are part of science and have objective solutions. They are not a religion permitting everyone to have his own opinion on viewing it.

Actually, the solution is correct, as you (as White) always have to play the best moves. Not only are these moves best, but they're also the only ones that give White an advantageous position. It's only Black that has to make an inferior first move - and it is in fact only inferior because it leads to the line in puzzle, even if it might on the surface appear to be sound. I think you misunderstood my comments about the puzzle. But I agree with you that puzzles where Black isn't defending properly are crappy puzzles, hence my original comment.

I didn't comment on your comment but on Luxems comment using a weird gamelike argument to excuse an inferior defense. Your argument that white wins anyway is valid!

It is still a non-standard solution as white has more than one way to win after ...Qe1 for instance by Nd3+. At that point the puzzle changes from a "white win" to a "checkmate in n moves" puzzle. The illogic is that you couldn't say "checkmate in n moves" from the start since that would really force black to play a longer lasting defense while sidelining your nice checkmate combination.

I think Luxem was also saying that it's always good to practice capitalising on mistakes, as doing so prepares you for actual games (which are bound to contain loads of mistakes from your opponent) better. I must admit: that is a solid argument.

Unfortunately, I see what you're saying. I noticed the alternative winning moves at the very beginning, but I just couldn't find a way to eliminate them. I guess one excuse that I could come up would be to say that the puzzle was intended to be multi-phased

Arisktotle

Ah, I love multi-phased! Let's try and formalize that wink.png

I was a bit harsh on Luxem. I always get triggered when someone enters game conditions in puzzles since they are so different.

Honestly, I share your sentiment. I hate it when puzzles are anything other than segments of creatively constructed chess games. Sure, other puzzles might be great, but they will never be genuine chess puzzles. Other people might like that, but I kinda like chess, so that's what I prefer to stick to.

Here is perhaps the simplest puzzle that I've posted so far, but it's still aesthetically pleasing.
