This is the first of nine puzzles out of "Mensa Mind Challenges". More will come out during the week.

Puzzle number one: A mate in 60 (50 move rule non-withstanding)

In this first puzzle, you can't move any of the pieces. Any solving will have to be completely cognitive or on a board of your own. There are two ways to solve this puzzle. Good luck! :) You can scroll down for the answer after you think you have it.

For White to win, he has to force one of Black's knights to move. Then, provided  White's king is safe from unwanted checks and White has not moved his own knights, White wins with Ne4 mate or Nd5 mate. The actual winning move depends on which knight Black eventually moves. This is a mate in 60 because Black can delay moving his knights for 59 moves (and a draw would be reached before the mate because of the 50 move rule, but let's not get technical ;) ).

Hi Jesse,

The 50-move rule is that no cature and pawn move has been made in the past 50 moves.  CLearly a pawn will be moved, so the mate is still possible with this rule included.
