Solving hard puzzles is a great way to improve your skill level, right?

Absolutely. Solving a puzzle only confirms the level you're at. It doesn't help you improve. You need to attempt puzzles harder than your current level to improve. Getting a puzzle wrong confirms that your level is below the level of the puzzle. Keep doing puzzles harder than your current level until you become familiar with them and getting similar ones right. That's a good indicator that you're improving.
