Queen vs Pawn Endgame

Not really a puzzle so much as a demonstration of endgame tactics. Can white prevent black from promoting the pawn without making the game a draw ?

Magic Squares !

That's a big part of my (poor) endgame's knowledge. I will not give the draw any other game in a such position.

However, beware of Bishop pawn  ;)

Yes, with the bishop pawn you get something like this:

Similarly, with a rook pawn, as soon as black's king moves into the promotion square white is forced to move his queen away to avoid stalemate.

Very nice. I have to practice more on my end game. Smile

I remember hearing that with the knight-pawns you can manage to get a draw but I don't remember the method

Only rook and bishop pawns draw.  Knight and center pawns lose.  In the OP's position, the trick is to check and pin the pawn until you force the defending king in front of the pawn.  Then the attacking king approaches, and you repeat as necessary until you force mate.

This comes up fairly often, with rook pawns especially.

The other part, if you're on the defending side, you can't ever let the queen in front of the pawn, otherwise the attacking king can approach and win the pawn at his leisure.

It is true that you can only win with central pawns or knight pawns and you can't win with bishop pawns and rook pawns(you  can only win if you have the queen
