@BigDoggProblem Here is the problem updated. Can you solve it now? (change: black knight added on e8)

Pieces to place: , , .
Resulting position: White to play and mate in one by White.

Sure.

+wRc6, +wBh1, +wKh2 --> 1.Rxc8#

wK and wB can be several other places.

I'll rework that one.

Fixing the 1.Rxc8# double-check issue. But now, it makes it obvious.

Yes. This was what I had in mind all along. My fault, sorry.

Don't worry about it. When you compose, sometimes the problems get cooked. Happens to everyone.

The best I can do is +bBd1, Pf2. Comp says black has mate in 4 even with white to move.

This is possible. I have verified it. I have also found by myself 2 extra answers which I immediately fixed by adding an extra bishop on a4 in order for the solution to be unique. I also verified my initial solution to still be valid after this addition. It may make the intended solution easier for you, but the challenge remains.

Bonus question for Puzzle #25: what are the 2 extra solutions could you have presented that I have fixed?

+Ph4, Be2

1.KxP Kh2 and ...g5 next.

If 2.Nxg7, then 2...Bf6# is also a possibility.

+wNd7

Last moves were -1.Nf6xNd7 Nc5-d7 etc.

Try: +wNc6? but there is no legal retraction:

  • -1.N~xNc6? but bNc6 cannot retract, nor can any other black unit
  • -1.N~xR/Q/Bc6? but the pawn capture scheme is impossible
