If you are talking about the white rook going to the bottom rank, then note that if the queen took it, Qxh7# rapidly follows.

If you are talking about hte black rook going ot the bottom rank, then what better move can black play?

Please give a better line of play for either side?

Okay, in that case I agree that a spite check is stupid. But it's the best black can do to avoid losing (there follows a mate-in-12 according to Rybka, so black HAS to do that spite check sometime).

I have a question.  What if black goes 1...Kg8.  Doesn't this at least prolong the game or is there a quick mate in this case?

Black must eventually play Rh1+ regardless, but yes, 3... Kg8, 3... h5 and 3... h6 are better than 3... d5?, as they delay mate two more moves.
