Sacrifice To Win
Next time, try to avoid having two dark-square bishops ;)
I just fixed STW 8. Thank you!

Easier than some of the 900s. That's why I say the rating doesn't mean much with those.
I honestly don't know how accurate the problem ratings are. Since my tactical rating is 300 points higher than my Live Chess rating, 1300 TT to 1000 Live Chess Blitz, maybe the tactics ratings are inflated a few hundred points.
I need a lot of practice with deflections, sacrifices and tactics like that. So, for my benefit and that of my readers, I will post the one's I have already posted in numerical order. That way, we can all go through them quickly each day without sifting through all of the other posts.
I'll do this when I get home from work. My goal is to have hundreds of these tactical motiffs posted, with the idea of repeating theme over and over again in order for the patterns to stick.
I will continue to do random tactics problems as well. It seems like both approaches are necessary, at least for me.
A review of the Sacrifice To Win puzzles thus far in one convenient location for drill and practice.
STW 1 - 5
STW 11 - 15
Hey like the puzzles
One small minor detail in STW11 though:
- The last move the rook Rxd2# or Re2# is kind of both checkmate. So in order to be fully puzzly correct, the last move should be deleted
@ MatthiasVanCampen - I'm glad you are enjoying the puzzles.
It helps when people find errors with my puzzles, and Ajedrecito has been most helpful.
Regarding STW 11 - Houdini shows Rxd2 as the only checkmate in one. It is Bc6 that is checking the king in the end, a discovered checkmate made possible from Rxd2#.
If White defends perfectly, i.e., interposes, Black is still completely winning with a rook, bishop and four pawns against White's knight and three pawns. Click on move list for this more stubborn defense.
Here's an example of a discovered checkmate from my most recent Live Chess blitz game, Nf2# !
I did miss some basic tactics in this miniature, i.e., (king-queen fork, arg!), but I have an excuse. My wife called during the game. Need I say more?
I post this miniature to encourage anyone in my boat playing in the under 1200 Blitz pool to study tons of tactics and checkmates. This pool is not 99% tactics, but more like 105%! It's a fun way to play.
A good tactical motiff to know.
TA, NOICE!!
