The puzzle that you, Carlsen nor Stockfish can solve

Interesting explanation xman720, I don't know how engines works but maybe one day the engines will see more lines and detect winning lines in puzzles like this one.

WeakLightSquare

froztea: White wins in 11 moves after moving 5.Ke6. Any other move such as 5.Kd7 or 5. Kd5 is less clear.

Correction, in the puzzle I say it's mate in 11 moves if black plays ... Nf7+ but I believe it's in fact a mate in 4 then. The whole puzzle is probably mate in less than 30 moves with perfect play. See you guys in 100 years when quantum computers can solve this :p

GeorgiaQ

This is a very old and very known puzzle for chess enthusiasts. Some computers or if you like some engines are able to solve it very easily and this rests with the engine's ability to solve open or close positions.

Fritz 3 was able at the time to solve this without any help in 1996 or there abouts. The story is presented by the chesspuzzler at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTOpiIbUu0A and he also says in his video that Tal went for a walk and when he returned he had the solution.

Why would Tal need to go for a walk to find the solution to this puzzle? One theory is that he did consult a computer but of course no one can confirm it other than he himself.

Even using today's engines, many are still unable to solve this puzzle.

Did it the stockfish way in 30min. Very tough. Lots of guesswork

Bilbo21

So basically this is a waste of time.

Arisktotle

"Can solve" depends on the context mostly. Seeing it ahead in a game is a tremendous challenge for anyone. But locking yourself away with a chessboard in an interruptionfree environment with a pack of Donald Ducks, you will have it over in 24 hours.

By the way, had Rodin known Magnus Carlsen, he would have made different statues of "the thinker".

In case your like me and wanted to see the mate after NxQ...

That's better than on page 1

I have seen a puzzle similar to this before.. and it isn't like this. You sac all your pieces and end up mating with a K+B+P.

SilentKnighte5 wrote that message almost 2.5 years ago Dobby.

That said: Why can't stockfish_8 find the aforementioned mate when it's at depth 33? It just won't find 1. Nf6+, but when I put it in manually, after 3. Bc2, it just switches . Weird.

Chess engines just arent that good at puzzles/tactics as one would expect 😊

RMChess1954

Interesting I think that Komodo 9 now gives a plus score after about 22 ply (see below). This is a 60 ply mate that has black up material until near the end. Stockfish at 30 ply still gives Black the advantage.

Stockfish does solve the puzzle if you follow the lines it says are best, but just doesn't realize that white is winning until later.

The problem with this study is that it is very well known and in several endgame books. The computers are not the best in finding this kind of lines with Knight promotions.  I know it like,

MrPius_PHChess

my stockfish program solves this ez, u forgot to toogle use endgame tables

WeakLightSquare

Endgame tables only support 7 men, not as many as in this puzzle xD

I heard that Mikhail Tal took a walk after he was presented with this puzzle and came back with the solution (Kasparov and Karpov couldn't solve it.) Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Thanks for the link. Loved going through it.

The engine Gull 3 x64 (a free chess program) sees the advantage for white after a 17 seconds search (depth search 21)... solving the puzzle!!
