Can you add the two kings to the position, so that white to move, can checkmate black in one move?

white king f6...black king h8

white to move...Kg6 mate...

Avatar of rainxdancer

No... that doesn't work because

1.... Qf6+ 2. Bxf6#

That's two moves. Embarassed

Your theme is sound, but a blocking 1...Qf6 forces a 2nd move.  I confess, I see worse problems in the other corners so I am stumped.

edit, sorry didn't see raindancer had responded while I was writing

Rainxdancer,

OK, then clarify, is this a legitimate puzzle?  What is the source?  Is it something you made up just wondering if it is possible? etc?

I found the solution by Googling for the problem text...

Hint: It does happen in a corner.

Got it! White king f3, black king h1

1.Kxf2#

Otherwise queen can always block.

I don't think I ever would have seen it.  One just does not put ones king in check to start with.  Good puzzle. thanks.
