I was a bit annoyed that I had to guess at the route the knight would take, since it's the same outcome.

Putting the rook back on the h-file would be foolish.  If 1...Kh4, White plays 2.Rb5.

simply the best reply for black here is h4, hoping for a stalemate afterwards if white got careless!

If i were on the game playing white, honestly, i could never think the move played in the puzzle on which the white pieces won!

I think I'd spot it.  There are so few options that I'd have time to thoroughly calculate.  The first two moves are obvious.  The question is 'would I think to promote to a knight?'  Since a queen is obviously a draw, I don't think it would take long to figure out.

Great puzzle! as a puzzle anyway even if an unlikely OTB situation.  Note that

1 Rg6 Kh4 fails as now 2Rb6 is out as the black king escapes if white promotes to a knight and he can still stalemate himself if white queens. Plenty to look at.

Such is a problem with the PGN software and those that do the tactics trainers complain of it as well.  They cannot give credit for alternate solutions.  But if you got it other than that, you clearly solved it.
