Very difficult mate in 2
Great puzzle. I timed myself and used 18 minutes and 8 seconds total.
The first three I spent identifying mating patterns and identifying how white would win if it were black's move. The next 5 were spent identifying why all waiting moves didn't work (all the moves like Kb8 and Qh8 were thwarted by the move ...e5, effectively unpinning the rook). The 2 minutes following that, I found the winning move (Bc6) along with the winning idea: "If I can get my bishop to b6 in response to ...e5 without the rook being able to take it, it will be mate". The final 8 minutes was just me combining the mating patterns I saw previously, ensuring all possibilities, all 15 of them (consisting of 7 patterns), lead to mate. Maybe slow to others, but got it first try! ![]()
smartykids ummmmm isn't it just any rook move on the 2nd rank (excluding g2 and h2)? Ra2,b2,c2,d2, and e2 all lead to Rf3 mate.
Bc6 is the solution
