It was first 3000, when it deducted to 0. Why?

Your new puzzles rating is explained in this article:

Everyone's rating was revised, not just yours. As far as I know, all ratings were revised downwards so that they would be more in line with other playing ratings and so that the individual puzzles would be accurately rated.

It's hard to take the big drops that have happened. I won't be renewing my Gold membership.

The ratings adjustment is ok, but the puzzle penalty points are too severe versus the winning points of 2-3. It is not fair nor motivating.

I agree. I completely understand the old puzzle ratings were vastly overinflated and something needed to be done. But honestly having -12 vs 3 for incorrect:correct is just demoralising and makes the system unplayable from. There will always be those who say just be a better player and learn if you want a higher rating. But it’s not about ratings in puzzles for me it’s about learning and when the game theory of being consistently and disproportionately knocked back is applied it just results in overall lower engagement.

But you did 71 puzzles today and your rating rose somewhat.

Somewhat yes. But nothing compared to what it used to be. I’d worked hard for a long time building up. And it’s a bit demoralising the way it’s set now to be honest.

Switch to extra hard if you want higher rewards and lower penalties (with harder puzzles)

I was a bit over 3300 and dropped to just above 2000, so yeah, dropping 1300 points was a shock at first. But honestly:

  1. The guaranteed plus five per puzzle no matter how easy it was made no sense. That’s like saying Magnus should get plus five Elo for beating random 1200s, which would be crazy.

  2. The idea to make puzzle rating actually match and predict real Elo strength is a good one. Before this, the rating didn’t really mean much because people could just grind tons of easy puzzles and end up with insanely high numbers that had nothing to do with their actual playing strength.

  3. The number only means something in the context it’s compared to, and that context has now changed for everyone. So really, most players are still about where they were before in terms of percentile.
