A cat lover’s points of guidance

There are eight points in total, so I shall post two of them each day, until all eight have been posted.

1) Always treat a cat seriously. Above all avoid a patronising tone of voice. Never laugh at a cat or risk the least touch of ridicule. You can of course talk arrant nonsense provided the tone of voice is right and another human does not laugh at you ( with the Cat feeling it is being ridiculed).

2) When trying to make friends with a strange cat , place yourself in a receptive stance. Remember that at many times it’s height a tall human must seem pretty forbidding, so lower yourself.( Some cat’s ultimately stretch up to reduce the distance.) But do not approach the cat too rapidly or closely. Let the cat make the final approach. Don’t try to make friends unless you have time and patience.

This concludes the first two points of guidance, tomorrow I shall post the following two.

3) look e cat straight in the eyes, which again often means crouching or allowing the cat onto the table . When you have it’s attention , show that you are relaxed by blinking ( when the cat is relaxed it will take long blinks with you) and by licking your lips. To be the cat’s real equal you would of course need to lick it , but licking your own lips shows willing and will probably be repaid by the cat licking your fingers or kissing your nose.

4) Develop your own technique for drawing attention to the fact that you would enjoy a moment of social intercourse with the cat up the drive or on the opposite side of a quiet street .
A high-pitched sound as you draw in air between moist lips may bring a response, though few self -respecting cats will rush to you in a straight line . Do not give an invitation unless you are prepared to wait while it gains time for contemplation with a bit of cleaning or scratching. We humans after all scratch our heads when we are not quite sure what to do .

I can tell you're a true cat lovers Wolly. You even put in the slow blinking technique which I always use on cats. I also like to purr to them too. But I can tell you respect them and I respect that. 😺 Thanks for posting. Look forward to the other points
