The problem is with your premise. If you cut the cake into three equal pieces, then each piece is 0.333 recurring of the original cake. The alternative diagnosis is that you cut the cake into four pieces, three of 0.333 and one of 0.001.

You mean periodic. Irrational numbers are numbers that cant be written as a fraction eg. pi, root of 2, e etc.
