A tad chilly

Snowfall totals are upholding the pre-storm hype. I don't know if these are still being added to, but here are some of the reported totals as of late Saturday:

Baltimore, MD -- 26.8"
Central Park, NTC -- 26.8"
JFK Airport -- 27.7"
Harrisburg, PA -- 28.6"
Leesburg, VA -- 34.0"
North Potomac, MD -- 36.5"

well put, cp. i remember much earlier in my life when a forecast would be taken with a grain of salt. hell, i lived throught the blizzard in 1979 that cost the first woman mayor of chicago her job.

nowadays, the technology is clearer.

and, i'll never forgive W for not being more proactive prior to Katrina.

I forgot to note it here 3 days ago but you've probably seen in the news that the rover Opportunity hit the 12 year mark of operation on Mars this past Sunday. The original hoped for mission duration was about 12 weeks (90 days).

Opportunity is currently working on the south side of Marathon Valley, which is on the rim of Endeavour Crater (14 km wide). It's expected to wrap up work in Marathon Valley this year. It has been exploring the vicinity of Endeavor Crater's edge since 2011.

An impressive sinkhole opened up in Oregon yesterday. I think officials may have been a bit overly optimistic to say the road wasn't going to be closed until 9 p.m. yesterday . . .

screw. that.

i might rather fall into a sinkhole. only when the road is still open, though.

A high of minus -33° forecasted for Siberia Tuesday!  What's that saying of yours, CP?  "There's no such thing as cold weather, only inadequate clothing."?    Brrrr!

The past couple days have been above freezing here, which broke an 18-day stretch that didn't make it up to 32 F. Normal high/low (F) for this period is around 23/8 , but a couple minor thaws like this isn't unusual. It's even drizzling some this afternoon.

The Soo's lowest temperature so far this winter was only down to (-5) F, and there have only been 5 nights that went below zero F . The lowest daytime high was 7 F, and that's the only day when the high was below 10 degrees.

The water is still almost completely open here, though loose ice drifts in and out of the little bay in front depending on the wind and wave directions. But most of the 4-mile wide stretch doesn't have any loose ice or little floes at all. Last year by the middle of January there was solid ice extending out 30 or 40 miles into open Lake Superior from here.

I've had some days that felt like that! Cool But not so far this winter . . .

If you were getting the kind of snow you're supposed to be getting, it would make this next cartoon more appropriate.    Tongue Out

haha! very nice, joe!

i was about to say that i had a rough day today. we barely broke 80f.

brutal.

my wife is in PA, and is dealing with that garbage. took her a day just to dig out before she could consider driving anywhere. before the last storm, when 3' of snow was predicted, a radio host here stated that 3' of snow really means 9'. he tried to explain how, when digging out, yeah, it's more. it's a big blanket. most where i live have zero idea how snow can cripple.

while i miss many things about chicago, the weather isn't one of 'em.

and, i can visit, and then come back.

on the bright side, we are now into february. january is typically the coldest month. when i lived up north, i looked forward to spring at this time, even though there were some cold days and strange events.

i had a conversation with my brother the other day. his birthday is at the end of april, and he reminded me that there have been snowy days on that date in the past.

yeah.

not for me (anymore)

cp, i'll call you after the next snowstorm when i'm by the pool.

Good timing, as there was a winter storm warning in effect until a couple hours ago. Only about 6 inches of snow was expected (I haven't looked to see what fell yet), but 30 mph gusts and accompanying drifting was going to make visibility and road conditions bad enough to issue the warning.

The Soo's total winter snowfall through the end of January was only 39 inches. Average by that date is 81.6 inches.

arrgghh hope this doesn't happen, mind you, last Monday, we had a cold morning of 9C (avg. 18Cmin.)!

Avatar of Cystem_Phailure

I wonder why they even bother with the "summary" row in the forecast.

Actually, they don't really need the "chance of rain" or "rain amount" rows either.

Avatar of kco

Well after a hot day rain can build up and might get some drizzle in the evening or early in the morning.

Avatar of AlCzervik

i thought the same thing when i moved south, cp.

kelvin is right. storms, especially those that have not been predicted, can create an updraft the may alleviate the humidity and warmth.

plus, the dude lives on an island. good luck predicting the weather there.

Avatar of Cystem_Phailure

I was just referring to that specific table he posted, where the values for those rows were identical for all 7 days.
