Interesting! The ones I used weren't like those in the photo - they were just ordinary shoes with screw-in studs to give the horse more traction on slippery surfaces. That's why I put "snow shoes" in quotes. It's quite hairy riding down a slope that's covered in ice and the horse is trying to stay upright, so any extra help you can give it the better. However, even with the studs, ice can "ball" under the feet as the snow is compacted. Putting vaseline on the feet can help.
