I'm genuinely saddened by this news. Dennehy was 20 years my senior, so I feel like he was a constant presence.

It's common knowledge that serious majors include science, mathematics, engineering, business, history, medicine, veterinary medicine, etc. 

Sociology and communications are "soft" majors that do not require as much academic rigor. 

Education lies in between the hard and soft majors.

That's not to say the sociology and communications are not valuable.  Certainly, those fields of study have merit.
