The boards she is seeing is her visualisation of the position, along with mentally analysing the positions, and is the opposite of literally. It was an interesting take on how a chess player might visualize mental analysis and an effective method to get the idea across to the viewer. My favorite method for that is how it was done in The Luhzin Defence, but the show's version was good as well.
As to her strength, she ended up beating the US Champion and later the World Champion, along with other grandmasters in the final show's tournament, so in that fictional representation, she was certainly very strong.
I really enjoyed the mini-series.

Kinda a pity that these negative attention seekers are allowed to mock and trash talk our sport/ hobby. But that’s the price we pay. Thankfully we have the option to block these kids who think they are being funny by disrespecting the very thing that brings us all together.
