Anticipating Saturday, July 4th
With the worst fire danger conditions in my memory, we are hoping that no one sets off fireworks in my region. The annual wildfire season usually begins July 5 after someone's stupidity. But, this year, with drought conditions and record heat, we've already lost the northern end of an important small city in the area and have had several wildfires outside my community (the largest city between Seattle and Denver).
I love fireworks displays performed by skilled pyrotechnicians with adequate safety measures. I have no use for private, unsanctioned, displays which are generally unimpressive and dangerous.
As I recall from history, the 2nd Continental Congress approved the Resolution of Independence on 02 July 1776, and then the Jefferson, Adams, et al., "Declaration of Independence" on 04 July 1776.
I love the rationale behind the Declaration, and it's expositon of the Natural Rights of all humans.
Most people do not know the the original draft by Jefferson conained this clause:
"The King of Great Britain determined to keep open a market where MEN should be bought and sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or restrain this excrable commerce."
It is a shame this was dropped in the final version.
What a great day to celebrate landowners not having to pay taxes to England, thus forming a sovereign nation known throughout the world as the war-loving country! I just can't wait to hear the triumphant bomb-like noises which remind the world what we stand for! Cool!!

Thank you for the link, Ziryab. Our Founders liked to used "weasel words." like "ought to be," instead of "shall be" or "are".

I think it's piss poor planning to hand kids fireworks during the driest month of the year, period. Not everyone lives in the asphalt jungle, especially my region - So you buy your kid those fireworks, head home to your rural country existence, the kid can't resist the temptation to go play with fire and explosives, and boom, you got another wildfire! And this coming from a guy who can remember accidentally starting the grass on fire when my "Pop It" bounced off the side of the pool fencing and instead went off in the grass - and anyone who knows what a Pop It is can understand the odds of that little bitty noise maker (just some grains of powder in a tiny snip of tissue paper that goes bang when it is struck hard against something) actually sparking the grass... Well, it happened, and lucky I stomped it out before it caught the tall grass!
I know it's a long tradition, fireworks... but people can't expect kids to respect them for their fire danger... and this year is already horrible for fire danger.
