Also bear in mind that to get round cruelty allegations some countries sell shark under cover names. For instance here in Australia shark is called flake, ususally snapper shark. But they call it flake to market it.
Banning shark fin soup?
Where do you get your presumptions? Like that the shark is "tortured". Guess you've never gone fishing. The fish gets a hook in it's mouth (ouch), gets dragged into a boat, and is either clubbed to death with a single blow to the brain (read: instant death) or expires from lack of breathable air (read: slowly goes to sleep)
So where's the torture? We're not putting out cigarette butts on their bodies, or cutting pieces (like that fin) off of them while they are still alive. We're not water boarding them (although I guess for a fish, the equivalent would be putting a leaf blower up to the gills). We're not attaching them to car batteries. So where is the torture? Torture means drawing out the pain process.
As for dumping the bodies, maybe a select percentage of people might do that, but the vast majority would also be harvesting as much of the shark as possible. Ever heard of shark steaks? There's a lot of meat on a shark. Only the foolish would waste that.
Or how about other ways that shark is used. Ever have a pain on your rear so bad that run to the doctor, and he hands you a tube of Preparation H? Guess what that product's main ingredient is? Shark cartilage! So I guess the fin wasn't the only part of the shark used after all!
I dunno where you get your food, but going by the tone of your post, cutting that vegetable off the vine is torture, too! That plant feels pain! Guess we should all start eating only foods created in labs. Like a steak inside a little pill. That way poor Mr. Cow wouldn't have to suffer indescribable torture, lest it offend the poor misguided group who forgets where humans are on the food chain.
By the way, shark populations are very, very healthy these days in many areas of our oceans, thanks in part to conservation efforts by the same people who harvest them! Go figure!

It is common in Asia to do that to sharks. It is cruel to the shark.
Just drag it around by a hook in it's mouth, right?
"A shark is lively thrown down to the sea after it is caught, stepped on and de-finned. It takes lots of time for it to suffer until death."
I think when you kill an animal, you should eat the whole thing. There's something sick about just nicking of a small bit and dumping the rest- So yeah I'm for a ban also.
Ya know when Trysts finds out your talking about killing animals, your never gonna hear the end of it.

Not as cruel as dragging it by a hook in its mouth, cutting its fin off then tossing it back to die a slow and painful death, all so you can have a little bit of soup.
