Beware of Sinkholes
In the hot, expansive Karakum desert in Turkmenistan, near the 350-person village of Darvaza, is a hole 230 feet wide that has been on fire for over 50 years. Though technically called the Darvaza gas crater, locals know the crater as “The Gates of Hell.” Its fiery glow can be seen for miles around.

Must be cautious even around the small ones because they may continue to sink and expand.
There is a sinkhole in Florida that claimed a mans life years ago. It was filled in but recently has reopened. Crews are working to fill the hole again.

Sinkholes are pits that occur in the surface of the earth when material such as minerals or water is displaced. Some occur naturally and others are man made. The holes vary in with and depth ranging from a few feet to 2,000 ft. deep. Small holes often occur beneath the edges of paved roadways due to erosion caused by bater. Large holes can form after carbon or minerals dissolve or breakdown. The exchange of gasses and dilapidation weaken support of the surface which then collapses. Sinkholes can occur anywhere as any time swallowing people and homes without prejudice.
