Charles Dickens

I should not even be posting this, because I know the truth: Charles Dickens is a literary master. But I read one book, and hated it. We were forced to read 'Great Expectations' in high school. The description was remarkable, but the subject matter was very twisted, and for some reason really hit home with me. I think it has scarred me to this day!
Dickens is undoubtly one of the great masters of the prose, David Copperfield is one of my favorite books, but I have yet to read Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities which will go in my to-read pile as soon as I find them in english.
A Tale of Two Cities was my introduction into the world of Dickens. My favorite of the four is The Pickwick Papers which is Dickens's first book.
I've never read any of Charles Dickens books. I heard that he almost died in a train wreck while traveling with his mistress. Somebody told me that was not true as well. Any history on the truth?
I have to say he is one of my favorite writers, even though I've only read four of his works: A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and The Pickwick Papers. Although some may claim his sentences are uber long, his gift of describing a scene is spell-bounding. They are so vivid. Besides admiring his diction, he is hilarious. The Pickwick Papers nearly ripped a hole in my side. Just as fast as he can hit you with a good joke, he can pull at your heart-strings too.
