nerds are socially inept persons devoted to intellectual pursuits.
If you play like Kasparov and dream about Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders you're a nerd. If you play like Kasparov and can actually get a date with a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader you are not a nerd. It isn't the intellectual pursuit that makes you a nerd, it is the intellectual pursuit along with the sacrifice of social skills in that pursuit.
I'm not a stereotypical chess player. I drink most nights of the week, have a stunning girlfriend and love my social life. Then again I like politics, chess and history. Bit of mixed bag me. :)

When an atom loses an electron, he becomes a negative ion, not a positive one. Or is that the joke? It sounds like it would make more sense if the atom said "I think I gained an electron."
Well i know im not a nerd. Every other part of my life is far from nerdy. I actually need to reel my social life in a bit and get a little more serious with my life. Yet i enjoy chess, it challenges me, and after 7 years of not playing i enjoy the odd game on here.
people at my school call me a nerd because they're jealous that I have a larger vocabulary than them. I also like school, which one person said was scary. What is happening to people these days? They drop out of school for no reason.

i am my school champion, for the last 2 years and i do get some slack for going to chess club, but its all lighthearted i go out with my friends have fun, play sport, i go and watch football, im the least steriotypical chess champion your going to meet, i play for the rugby and cricket team, but what im saying is all the chess players i know arnt "geeks" or "nerds" but they see chess as just another sport or pass time. and the people calling us nerds are just idiots trying to act hard, when they just look stupid.

what's wron with not being social? i agree we have to have a few friends, but in my opinion, being smart is better than being "popular" or "cool". chess is not a nonsocial hobby. you talk with your opponents, right. you can meet people with the same intrest. if people call me a nerd, i will say that that means they are admitting i am smarter than them

an electron is a particle with a NEGATIVE charge. therefore, losing a negative electron means there are more positive protons in that atom, therefore making the atom positive.
Nerds
full definition of nerd is someone who can use a computer which makes most of the planet nerds as they use facebook or some other application to chat with there friends 
ie the new name for nerds is i,m a p / c see the ads

Actually chess is a fun game ONLY if you just play it with your common sense, but people have made it an evil game by studying books and adopting pre existing techniques that i some times hate to play. These people actually cheat because they are not playing purely by their mind but by the experiences of others and that makes it like a job and not fun. I hate those cheaters and so called champions and chess fake gods. i like people who play spontneously, just using their own mind wisom tacics and common sense.because i like to play for fun not to drop others confidence down.bringing others self esteem down is no fun and i think its unhuman n cruel. we should treat it just a game and no more. and play using only your own mind and thinking.
