Different people = Different spellings?

I was bored so I decided to play a online game of minecraft (don't judge me) someone was asking me a question. They said "What's your favorite colour?" I told them "Gray" they said "Oh grey is my favorite colour too.". I spell 'colour' 'color' and 'grey' 'gray'. Which way is right? Are they both right? I've been confused about this for a while now and would like a answer.

So have I been writing gray and color wrong my entire life?

I've always learned to write it like "Gray" and I don't like grey because it makes me think of the movie "50 shades of grey" lol

So both ways are correct?

Oh thanks! Now I can fall asleep at night knowing I'm not making a fool of myself.

It depends on where you are. (USA or UK).

To me that's just dumb. Why can't we all spell the same way! #FirstWorldProblems

The difference is between American English and English English.

The reason colour became color is because the early Americans felt they needed some language differences to show they were different from the UK. For example, on my UK English iPad color and gray are simply incorrect. (Red underline)

In Britain- colour and grey is correct.

In America- largely color and gray, however I think it is more lenient in America as they accept both the changed and unchanged.

Sadly I can't chat on Minecraft because I used codes to make my username look crazy.
