Bald Eagles were unheard of around here in northern PA when I was young. Now they're common and we see many while kayaking. Here's one of them.
It looks like a blue-winged Kookaburra.
Thanks. They're an impressive bird and hard to mistake when perched or flying. We're disappointed if we don't see one on a kayaking run. The one in that picture is an old friend that we've been kayaking by for years. This next pic isn't very good but I believe it shows the same bird on the left. I think it's the female because of its size and proximity to the nest. The bird in the nest was that year's hatchling. The picture was taken in May of 2018. The nest blew down this spring and two fledglings stayed nearby with the parents still tending them. We haven't kayaked in some time because the water levels are too low and the temps too high but the last I saw them they could both fly and seemed healthy.

Bald eagles are awesome creatures and dedicated nesters. I love to watch them tend to their young. Both parents take a very active role. Females are usually a third larger than males. You're fortunate to see them up close where you live.
Nice to see you again Tony. It's been a while.
