Those who wish to unsettle people in order to get them to blunder in their chess games are bound to be pathetic specimens, but given that, they will use whatever weapon comes most easily to their feeble minds, one being, perhaps, gender issues. As you say, it isn't a big issue. Disable chat.
OP was insulted for her gender and asked if men on the website received the same treatment. It's not a complicated topic and it doesn't need to be derailed over a few odd comments.
Men and women are abused by players with poor manners. Men, however, are not abused on the basis of gender. I laugh when someone blasts me with their xenophobia, thinking that I am Muslim or Arabic because of my name. I also report them. A few have been banned.
How can anyone on this site possibly know the gender of their opponent unless said opponent TELLS them? No one can be abused for their gender unless they put it out there. For myself, I've identified myself as MSteen, and my avatar is my cat. I'm not sure if I've mentioned my gender in my profile, but, if so, I guess I didn't care if anyone knows it.
Primarily, I'm here to play chess, not to be known as a man or a woman, a Christian or a Muslim, etc. I don't excuse or condone anyone picking on anyone for any reason. But if you want to avoid being picked on for gender, religion, race, age, weight, etc., DON'T GIVE PEOPLE THAT INFORMATION.
Remember "Lord of the Flies" when a certain fat kid confided that he always hated the nickname "Piggy"? Remember what they called him from then on?
I've been told that I look like a monkey, that I use an engine, that I'm an idiot, that I'm British ... so what? I'd like it if we all had a little black list so we didn't have to block people but we'd just get a warning from ourselves that a person we're about to play is on our black list.

I wasn't directing the comment at you or anything like that. Sometimes these kinds of threads can go in the wrong direction. But yeah some guys do deal with this kind of thing. It's not as apparent or common but it happens.
I've even has sexually explicit insults from men. As I said, it doesn't happen so much these days, it seems. If it starts I just hit "no chat" and try to make a mental note never to play them again. So it in't by any means limited to men hitting on women.
Just that some people have problems. This is an interactive, social site with the object of defeating each other in "battle". I think one accepts that some people are stupid.
sorry but i do think im being true and fair with my comments and i have gotten kinda sensitive to the sort of 'feminism' which is actually nothing but a crusade against men. There are sexist men and there are sexist women. And sexism against men is rarely critisized these days.
Yeah I didn't pay too much attention to those comments anyway. I think he was trying to be helpful and went a little overboard. It happens.

You move in the wrong circles then! Sexism by women against men is tolerated to some extent because, historically, they have been more often the victims and also because men are not supposed to be softees!
There are two types of women's lib. My wife claims to be a women's libber and I completely believe her. But there is the other type that hates men. They definitely do exist and they can be poisonous, but best ignored, perhaps, interspersed with occasionally telling them not to be such bigots. I've been attacked for saying I think homosexuality can be a choice. I've had idiots say "and when did you choose not to be gay". More often than not, these are straights on what they imagine is a do-gooder bandwagon. But they too are no more than bigots, if they attack opinion like that.

You are making explicit what was clear to some of us in your earlier comments.
Why not string the losers along? Let them make the asses they are of themselves. They'll be gone soon, so, why not poke fun at them?
If comments on any site bother you, perhaps you need thicker skin-in the internet sort of way.
Bottom line-report, deal with it.

I have two dogs.
Feminism is in its so-called "fourth wave" and none of the waves have been reducible to a single purpose or "type".
These threads are brilliant for bringing out the layers of chauvinism that persist.
I am safely coccooned in "married" life, Fiveofswords. I don't go out looking for friends among young women who are single, where one is most likely to find these issues. So I have a rosy view of the world. But I can remember, in the dim and distant past, being gratuitously insulted by women's lib types and when I've finally given them some of their own back, a male friend has then criticised me heavily "for being nasty to his friends". The remedy has been to drop the male friend in question. Some people simply cannot help being hypocrites. Something to do with their egos.
I wish there were "like" buttons.
Yes. They want us to use Facebook to log in, post all of our games there, and yet, chess.com does not implement the single innovation that has driven FB to prominence: the "like" button offers internet capital.

Historically, I'm quite sure you're probably right, but I haven't been counting.
Basically one might divide people into the sympathetic or empathetic, the self-centred who are relatively apathetic to others and the self-obsessed who are manipulative and who judge others according to how useful or sympathetic they seem.
Don't derail it then.
