I don't exaggerate. I get straight to the point otherwise I keep drifting into oblivionwink.png

we accept the reality in which we are presented.

it's as simple as that.

Christopher from the Truman Show.

someone shoves a toy globe in your face and says this is where you live.

end of story!

Elroch

That's not how scientific education works, noodles. It's about teaching people the reasoning behind knowledge. It doesn't succeed with everyone.

define education Elroch?

i can prove education and indoctrination are one and the same.

in the end though................does it really matter?

Elroch

No, you can't prove "education and indoctrination are one and the same".

Rather you can fool yourself of that.

Explain to me how arithmetic and grammar are "indoctrination"? The same goes for a long list of other things, but let's keep it simple for now.

Is not schooling mostly memorization regurgitation?

Ever have a teacher/professor tell the class to try and prove them wrong about anything?

That is why teachers are teachers and the students are the students.

Those who had the greatest memorization capabilities received the highest scores.

I would agree about that but schooling is about indoctrinating individuals. Understanding is up to the individual.

Any teacher deviating from set parameters shall be dealt with.

No. As it happens I hated rote learning when young. This helped guide me towards maths and science where enough understanding made rote learning unimportant (the nearest I ever got to it was by being too lazy for 18 months of my chemistry 'A'-level (having already secured my place Cambridge to study maths), getting an "E" in my mock exam (albeit probably downgraded by a teacher who was hostile for a reason unconnected with academic matters) but got an 'A' in the actual A-level due to intensive revision that I didn't need for maths and physics. There was never a time when I did anything close to "rote learning" for maths or physics (well, since I learned the times tables!). I recall that when we got the text books for a new year, I used to enjoy reading them and understanding most of it before much of the year was gone.

I was sometimes the student (a little arrogantly) trying to prove the professor wrong. And improving my understanding by failing - hint, that is a lot better than refusing to understand.

Of course, at (high) school, arguing against a textbook is even less likely to be successful, because what they are teaching is more elementary.

That is why teachers are teachers and the students are the students.

They are the teachers because they have years more experience and knowledge and have achieved a proven good level of understanding of their subject and have also learnt how to pass that understanding on to those students who are capable. [I am thinking more of sciences and maths, but it also applies to other subjects].

Those who had the greatest memorization capabilities received the highest scores.

The reason you think education is about rote learning is that your own understanding was, to be blunt, not good enough.

It's not too late to fix that!

Wait elroch you went to Cambridge? Impressive
Elroch

Yeah. In fact I was what is traditionally called a Cambridge wrangler. Which probably means I have been underachieving ever since...

VERY old news now though. grin

noodles2112

Well, I did not go to Harvardwink.png

Who writes the textbooks?

Elroch

Very smart people, in my subjects!

Elroch

It's not really where you go, it's how well you make use of it. I would say many others have done better than me, for various reasons!

pcwildman

I went to Cambridge. Those hollowed halls haunted by all of the great minds which have passed before inspired me for many years. I had a lot of fun as a janitor.

pcwildman

College teaches you to teach yourself. Roll Tide! We stomped Cambridge many times in football.

pcwildman

They always won the coin toss, which is something we've never been able to figure out.

pcwildman

They were also highly unpredictable.

noodles2112

Smart people you say Elroch.

For more than 4 Decades textbooks claimed Piltdown man was definitive proof of evolution. Then it was discovered to be a hoax.

That doesn't sound like smart people to mewink.png

Sounds more like textbooks writers with an agenda.
