Hungarian isn't related to any other European language (except Finnish, which is its sibling) and follows a very alien way of thought and word order. I'm living now for the better part of three years in Hungary and still am unable to even hold a simple conversation. Thankfully l'm in a situation where I'm not really dependent on speaking the native language here.
Yeah. There's a lot of them here. And aren't they fierce about their language being better than English and Românian! :) They keep telling me that it makes far more sense.
The five vowels of the English language pale in comparison to Hungarian’s total of 14. As well as the basic “a, e, i, o, u” vowels, the Hungarian language also includes a further 9 variations on these: á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű. The pronunciation of each is slightly different and can change the meaning of a word completely.

With respect, that's not quite right. Hungarian is also related to Estonian - Estonian and Finnish are for the most part mutually intelligible.
