God count: Zero, One, or Many?

I won't take to the pen, start a cult which will turn into a full blown religion 2000 years from now or anything like that.

Nothing more to say. I would like to concur, and indeed I do in my own thoughts, but the majority of people think we're wrong here. How many Gods are in their collective heads, I wonder?

Maybe gods are just numbers for them, and therefore infinite?

bordlyron

Or maybe there are billions of personal gods in peoples minds.

One or more per believer

Two words, people. Two words everyone seems to be forgetting:

FREE WILL

The religious say that God gave man free will. To choose whether to believe in Him or not. So if there is indeed a higher power, whatever you choose to call Him, whatever religion you belong to (or don't belong to), the message stands: Man has free will to believe or not to believe. So, say you take the stance that an athiest is wrong for not believing. That would be defying your own beliefs, because God gave free will, meaning He does not demand you believe in him. To cast down an athiest as wrong is to negate a fundamental belief of God granting man free will. Think about it. If he demanded everyone believe in him, wouldn't he have just skipped the part about granting man free will, something clearly specified in scripture?

So next time you want to knock someone for believing [or not believing] in a higher power, how about you contemplate the notion of free will first? It might negate your entire argument and save you from unnecessarily bashing another person for their beliefs or lack of beliefs.

I said it before and I'll say it one last time: To each his own. I doubt that, if there is indeed a higher power, that He will look upon your life and smite you down to the fiery depths of hell for not believing in Him if He saw that you led your life on the side of good.

Infinity is a difficult number to grasp. Even mathematicians struggle a bit with "levels" of infinity. Of course, the God(s) wouldn't. It must be known how many angels can dance on a pinhead.

Cool thoughts NomadicKnight, still off my original topic. To support (a bit) your premise, the late Issac Asimov (a devout athiest) was once asked why he didn't seek God. His response was simply, if there is a God, I believe He can find me.

The fervor of atheists is only matched by the fervor of the religious...

The cult of atheism or the cult of God.

To each his own as NomadicKnight says...it is the best route to go.

Many of us atheists have little, if any fervor. This discussion began with nothing of my personal beliefs, but only a question about the number of gods which people believe in. I've even asked that the tone & direction be changed a couple of times. You have now inspired me to begin a new topic. Thanks, and good night.

Bien au contraire.

You are in the ON crusade mode at all times, denigrating people of religion every chance you get, taking on an "intellectual superiority", condescending posture - "deeming" and "judging" others as worshipping the "man in the sky" etc. etc.

It is cult-like extremists behaviour of intolerance, imo.

Please let me know when I did ANY of the things with which you accuse me.

bordlyron

I think you've chosen the wrong target for your slings and arrows.

Feufollet

LOL...you're kidding me, right?

Feufollet

When I said "you" I was referring to atheists - that collective.

bordlyron

If I'm wrong, I will humbly apologize.

bordlyron

Got it.

bordlyron

So you're just a judgemental a-person. Cool. Thanks for informing me. Good night, indeed.
