I can’t believe an adult would actually say this….
GUNS
Because I know enough about this subject that I KNOW 100% of what I said is correct.
"I’ve taught both police and the military"..... Oh ***, another ExploringWA In another thread you were a big rig driver..... Let me guess, you do brain surgery part-time also, right? Law enforcement will be the 1st to tell you they don't aim to kill.....just take him down. If you have to shoot out both legs, so be it.
You really have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, @RonaldJosephCote. You seem to have no idea what a real world self defense shooting would be like, and seem to have derived most of your ideas on the topic from that greatest of all teachers of the idiotic, Hollywood.
Also on display is the fact that you don't understand the effects of a bullet on the body of a human being and that their effectiveness in stopping a threat all depends on where you place your shots.
I usually stay out of these discussions because I hate to argue and they seem to always get nasty. But Ronald, If you are going to stay in the argument you really need to learn more about the subject. Baptistpatriot and UnclePeet are right, law enforcement will never tell you to shoot at anything other than center-of-mass, which primarily means the chest but also the rest of the torso. Everything else can move too quickly or is too hard to hit in a stressful situation. Yes, they do it all the time on TV or in movies but that's just Hollywood. About the only thing Hollywood gets right about firearms is that they go bang.
To try move closer to the thread's original intent I'll relate a short story of the ugliest rifle I own.
A friend once needed a rifle as hunting season approached so he asked me to find something inexpensive he could use. He knew I frequented gun stores (degenerate that I am) and also knew I could tell a good rifle from bad. So I stopped in at my favorite shop and asked what they had that would fill the bill. They dragged out an old 1917 Enfield (bolt action military rifle from WWI) that someone had started putting a sporter stock on but never finished. It was as ugly as Satan's grandmother but the bore looked good and all the metal was in decent shape. They sold me the rifle, a no-name 3x9 scope, and a box of ammo for $165...and mounted the scope.
It would barely group 10" at the 100 yard range. When I checked the tightness of the stock I saw the action flex a little as I tightened a screw. Aha! A brother had some inletting black for fitting stocks so off I went. Whoever had started on the replacement stock had shaped it somewhat but never fit it to the action. After a bit of rasping and chiselling work the stock would seat tightly without any flex. Back at the range it took about ten shots to get the action fully seated again. Recoil pounds the action backward into the stock tighter than anyone can by hand. Lo and behold it grouped about 1.5" at 100 yards. Not the greatest but easily acceptable.
I shaped the stock a little and splashed some stain on just to seal the wood but it was/is still ugly. My friend was successful with that rifle that year but never bought the rifle. A nephew used it successfully a couple times years later. Strangely, I've never used the rifle except that one day at the range. Still don't mind owning it, though.
Amazing how hippocritical BaptistPatriots is..... He wants to praise God, but at the drop of a dime he and all the other gun nuts wanna violate one of God's major tenants.......Thou shall not kill.
Maybe you should learn how to shoot. You stick with your beliefs, I'll stick with mine.
I don't understand how you believe that just owning a firearm has somehow turned me into a raving, blood-thirsty psychokiller.
I'll start by saying that's absolutely the last thing I'd ever want to do. I have almost never carried a handgun. Partly for lack of need, partly for not having a good concealed carry gun, partly because it is heavy both in weight and responsibility.
To answer your question, I don't know. I've never been in any situation where I might have to decide and I don't believe anyone truly knows until faced with the choice. If it ever came down to it I sincerely hope I'd have the presence of mind and the judgement to only do what is necessary to protect life and limb, mine or others. I don't want to ever hurt anybody but I won't just let someone else hurt me or others either.
I'm from a different world than some others in this thread. I grew up in a rural area called the Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania. Back then it was mostly woods and dairy farms. The nearest town was six miles away over a hilly dirt road. Hunting was a way of life for everyone. Not only did it add food to the pantry but also allowed fathers and sons quality time together in the outdoors. Of course hunting was only a small part of the year. Most of the time I just ran wild through the fields and forests for entertainment. And developed a love of firearms. Handling them became as natural as tying my shoes. As I've said somewhere around here before, I have rarely considered firearms as weapons. I have a number of rifles but they're either for hunting or are part of an old military collection. I have one handgun I would consider a weapon. I've owned it about twenty years and it's never shown the least inclination toward violence.
If every firearm in the US would magically disappear, would that make society safer or less safer?
I will respond with a few questions of my own: throughout history, have human beings been killing each other with or without firearms, and even prior to the existence of firearms?
Another good question: what has been the result all through history when an unarmed or close to unarmed populace have been ruled by an armed government?
Here's another: taking firearms out of the equation, how many different types of weapons and/or work tools that can be used to kill are there currently in existence?
Another: do people have hands and feet?
Another: can human beings be beaten to death by fists and feet?
I could go on.

He has 190 black belts....lol. There are over 190 different martial arts in the world.
