On Christmas Day, 1914, in the first year of the First World War, both sides agreed to take a ceasefire, and soldiers from both sides decided to engage in the festivities with each other. This was the single most peaceful day in the entire war, but it is depressing firstly because they would not let it happen in the following years, and secondly because the same soldiers who had become friends would go back to killing each other the very next day.
