Perhaps Google maps will explain it to you. Why don't you search for a nearby base? They do have to exist someplace.
I happen to live near a base myself and from time to time, helicopters pass overhead. So far, despite my efforts at hospitality, they haven't dropped in.

Otherwise, your statement about just noticing it must be untrue, because you later state that you really noticed it before you just noticed it.
