You have to score three norms. But first you have to be normal to do that. It helps to have a family member be your agent and fly you all over the place to get you to your tournaments. Some mad chess talent also helps.
Actually, you don't have to be normal. I can think of some grandmasters who aren't.

The difference between me (2300 online) and a GM is pretty much the same difference between a fetus and me
How? I'm saying I'm a lifetime away from GM and I'm a rating people usually think is "good"
Any fide rated tournament, however I’d suggest hitting 2000 rapid before even considering gm.
