Dude I LOVE my country! I give it an 8...

I would give a 9 to some places like Poland, or Germany. A 10 to Finland and Canada (although this is for what I've heard), but my place is beautiful.

Please don't be too serious on the topic and please...please don't go political, afraid that might turn to rivalry of Hillary's supporters & Obama's fans or maybe Hitler's back up & Einstein's club.

I don't really see how this topic can't go political. The decisions your government makes ultimately affect you on a daily basis (i.e. national healthcare, taxes, welfare, decisions to go to war, etc.). Politics has everything to do with why or why not you would like your country.

As for the US, (trying to stay off politics) our people are more obsessed with who's going to entertain us than who's going to lead us (i.e. American Idol). Actors and "professional" atheletes are paid more than doctors, scientists, and teachers. We refuse to give up the assinine customary system in favor of the more sensible metric system. We won't even give up calling football soccer. For cripes' sake, it's a name! It's not that important!

We are a people ruled by greed and self-satisfaction. We do things that don't make sense and don't care, and I don't really like being lumped in with that group. And I'm sure there are plenty of people after me who're going to say "if you don't like the USA, then get out". But that's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying there are a lot of things that need to be fixed that aren't going to get fixed, because the public doesn't care. They just want to listen to their rap "music" and grind on the club's dance floor. It's a sad situation, but we put on a good front. :)

On the upside, we are still better off than a lot of other nations, so I guess that's a plus. I guess I'd give the US a 5. Not great, but not as bad as it could be, either. And we are certainly not "the greatest nation in the world, baby! Yeah! Go USA!" Idiots.

you could not give an honest perspective if you did not know the view points.  but having traveled abroad to many different countries, i find that the US of A is about a 6.  the vast landscape and its natural resources has to rank 10 or 9 but it ranks at the bottom of the list for its people.  people in high places of control, the banking institutions and its government.  but i would guess that is the case all over the world.  like Carl Sagon said, "the old appeals to racial, sexual and religious shovanism, to rabid nationalitic fervor are beginning not to work.  the new consciousness is developing which sees the earth as a single organism and, and recognize that a organism at war with itself is doomed".  sums up ranking of countries to be a cause of rabid nationalistic fervor to start some irrate discussion which leads to never ending tit for tats which has no value to anything......

Kyuudou :There are certainly a lot of things to be fixed in each country and don't think that everthing has to be perfect, that's why I start with how do you like  instead of how do you not like, and speaking of political issues, aren't you tired to see people fighting everyday upon it ?

If it's just a name and not that important, then why make a big deal about it?

You seriously need to learn more about the U.S. history, foreign relations, and the contributions that we have made in our short lives (U.S. is very young). Since this cannot go political, I can't speak of these things. The U.S. is not as bad as you make it out to be. Nor are we as self-asorbed, greed, ect... Every country must be somewhat selfish, they owe it to the citizens.

I give the U.S. a 9 and quite a few people must agree or we would not have become (and still becoming) the "Melting Pot". We have a diverse landscape, diverse cultures, decent infastructures, great living conditions, good education, good job opportunities, great entertainment, freedom, good military...

Nobody should tell you to leave this country, you are free to express yourself (credit that to living in the U.S.). Just beware that your lack of knowledge is apparent with the post that you wrote....

Checkers4me: I knew someone would make that assumption about the "football/soccer" argument. I wasn't making a big deal about what we call it so much as how borish and pigheaded it makes us look to the rest of the world that we won't give in and change things. I, personally, don't really care. It just makes more sense to call a game that is played almost entirely with one's feet football. I'm just saying the rest of the world seems to have it right on this one, and even though we know it, we won't change.

And please don't presume to tell me what I do and don't know about the US's history and contributions. I realize we have accomplished a great deal in our short past, but look at the present. What are we doing now? Enforcing "democracy" on other nations is first of all, defeating the purpose, and secondly, infringing on other's rights to govern themselves. We think we've got it right so everyone else should follow our example whether they like it or not.

And of course I appreciate the freedoms this nation affords me. I was merely stating that there's more in this nation that needs to be fixed than doesn't, the education system for one. (And don't try to tell me that's fine, because unless you're a teacher too, I'm quite certain that I know more about the situation.) Although I suppose I was focusing on the negative when I said 5, so I might change that to a 7.

Toharno: I don't see it as fighting persay, so much as debating (if done properly with the right amount of civility). Discussing politics is the only way to improve it. If no one ever says "Why aren't you doing a better job?", most people will just sit back and collect their pay. There has to be some measure of accountability to keep most people working their hardest. I would like to believe that everyone would do the best job they can through intrinsic value, but that's not the case.

And I realize there's no such thing as a perfect nation, but it seems our's has a lot more room to improve than others. It's like Robin Williams said (I know, not an intelligible reference, but it fits), "Canada's like the grouchy upstairs neighbor above a really great party. 'Eh! Keep it down, eh!'..." Well I'm not much of a partier. I'd rather things be fixed than just distract myself with entertainment like most of the nation does.

Yes, and it's all in the mind.  Outside of that, there's really no earthly heaven, but hell is all around (especially when people are not given dignity).

Kyuudu - Your point is well taken. I agree that a lot needs to be fixed (education prior to college). Around here, what I don't like about education is that it is linked to property tax. Perhaps, that is the way it is everywhere, but I have no idea. To be honest, I would like for the U.S. to focus less on foreign relations (and decrease foreign aid) and focus more on internal issues. In my opinion, the last 8 years has hurt us a lot. I have a feeling that we will learn from our mistakes and do better going foward.

Being a soccer (football) fan myself, I would also like it to be called football here. It will never happen however...

Kyuudou :Like it or not when it comes to politics there will always be a pro and contra, if it's solved by word then you call it discussion, debate, negotiation ? but you have to consider that some might prefer to solve it in physical way then it's fight, war, rascism? This is what what I am tired of seeing. In my neighbour country Timor Leste it's now done in physical way, fight for power. I am sure your country must have a lot in plus values and vice versa, and if you enjoy living there maybe you should a least give 6. For me at least this country has only 2 seasons : rain & dry, it's very comfortable to live because I cann't imagine how I can stand snow season.Laughing

haha changing soccer to football. how about changing from imperial to metric like you were supposed to... like everyone else did.

If 10 is a living Heaven then I'll give my Country a 9.

Snow is terrible. I need to move down south.

We use the metric system in the U.S. For my job, I have to use both. In track and field, it is a metric system. Cars have both (speed limits are imperial). We do like to be different. Some call it arrogance. I'm sure this partially stems from how we became a country.

I agree that solving political problems in a physical manner is unacceptable. Indeed, one might argue if anything is solved by physical means. But as far as political debate goes, I don't see any problem with it as long as people don't get angry about it. However, that is rarely the case as most people have trouble detaching themselves from the argument.

And as far as the rating system goes, we have to accept a bit of standardization here. Everyone on this forum lives in a nation where they can at least have the freedom to own or use a computer to access the internet and play chess. So even if you're saying your nation's a 1, that's still not the absolute bottom of the barrel, just the relative bottom. I said 5 because I enjoy living here and the freedoms afforded me, but there is a lot to fix. Not bad, but not great either; a "middle of the road", if you will.

And lastly, on a completely unrelated note, snow is great! :-) Living in the south sucks during winter. All we get is rain and cold; we should at least have the consolation of snow if it's going to be cold. The last really good snow I can remember (that lasted for more than about two days) is when I was 5.
