How famous is Magnus Carlsen? Is he more famous than Michael Jackson in his prime?

I am fairly new to chess, and have only heard of Magnus Carlsen recently. I am surprised i never heard his name before, but based on the videos and articles on him i have read and watched recently he seems like a superstar in chess.

How famous is he? Is he more famous than Michael Jackson

Obvious troll is obvious, but I was watching a video where he turned up at a park, and the people playing didn't know who he was. Most people don't follow the tournament scene.

Do you have a link to the video? Also how old was he at the time?

I tried to find videos of him interacting with fans. There are a few where crowds gathered for his autograph at chest events and stuff.

And in a part of his documentary his sister said when he became world champion he started to be recognized more often in public which he didnt like

Of course, Chess had always been more popular than music.  Everyone listens to or watches chess when they're not playing it.

The others here are just jealous of Carlsen.  His posters are in every bedroom. Also he has the best jokes.

I live in Norway, so i have no choice other than to know who he is. Have almost literally seen him grow up.

that makes me curious, do young women in Norway see him as an eligible bachelor since he is relatively young, athletic, and traditionally handsome, as well as being so talented / gifted at chess and a millionaire?

    When half the sensationalistic papers and magazines at the supermarket check-out counters have Magnus Carlsen stories hyped on their covers every week for years he will be as famous as Michael Jackson was in his prime. Don't hold your breath waiting for this to happen.
