Because a belief in a god or gods, a position that an atheist would argue lacks evidence, skews the understanding of all sorts of other areas such as science, morality, society etc etc. Not only does this waste the time of a lot of people (their problem) but beliefs based on an illusion can be positively damaging (everyone else's problem!).

And there are a few statues of Darwin around, notably in the Natural History Museum in London. But, in any case, Evolution through Natural Selection - the work of lots of scientists and not just Darwin - neither proves nor disproves the existence of a god although it is rather unhelpful to the Argument from Design.
