So, how can you determine whether the person annoying you here at chess.com is a troll?
There are some telltale signs:
Few, if any, friends who are not also trolls - they tend to be like "lone wolf" terrorists
Little involvement in groups or teams - no roots on the site - they come just to make trouble
More often then not, they are not premium members
They "know their way around" because they have been here before, and were likely banned
They lie a lot and repeat their lies - this is the Joseph Geobbel "Big Lie" technique.
They are bullies.
They tend to be stalkers who follow their victims from topic to topic.
They don't play much chess.
I got chased away by relentess trolling earlier in the year.
I came back to confront them and to expose them.
Ask, by PM, if you want to know more. I can give you concrete examples.
[Edit - I have decided to let sleeping dogs lie. No sense in naming the stalkers and creepers - that is feeding the trolls. I am still on the job, slowly getting rid of them, one by one.]
I believe Internet trolls are losers who have no life outside of the internet. People who are being shut out and ridiculed in their societies because they choose to be such slimy, disgusting characters.
They are probably being bullied by wimps...
Best way to deal with them is to just ignore them and block them.
I have a moderate block list. I weed out those who have been banned or left the site, from time to time.
Shouldn't chess.com have a public list of trolls, such as the now-defunct list of caught cheaters? I wonder what Erik thinks of the idea.
I'd have to agree with the " get pleasure out of hurting people"
Sometimes my jokes and comments are off the wall, but the're never intended to harm, let alone get pleasure from harming. Good Luck Jamie. I know your making an effort to improve the site. Hopefully this thread will have legs like the "slow chess death" thread.

They should, but they won't - the Holy Grail of "Don't Name and Shame" is sacrosanct, but viscious personal attacks are allowed. Trolls are a cancer which are ruining the site.
For over my first year here, I bought gift premium memberships for those who demonstrated a willingness to help out in running teams, were friendly in chat, and who were a joy to be around - the type of people the site needs to grow. I stopped that practice a few months ago, because I am not convinced those running the site are dedicated to doing it the right way.
They need to regain my trust before I will open my purse again. I just don't see that happening.
That shouldn't matter, when it comes to evenly and fairly enforcing the terms of service.
A lot of people don't know, or forget about, your contributions, bud. They will bring up getting muted, but forget the financial support and the morale-building to which you contribute.

Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and SadistsGreat article! Interesting study
yes
they should label "serious thread, jaukes not admitted"
or "jauke allowed"; SERIOUSLY.
Sometimes people would die for a good one, risk even to be muted if OP is "bonnet de nuit" , we call that night hat, for people who are sad; it happens sometimes OPs are just too serious some crying, other "oin oin", with no humour at all, some just sick , to bring their own case after three posts, psychoanalysis and urin flask included, and again and again on interestin' artistic threads. The worse are people who feel offended you didn't even they were there. or people defending as an "action class" various people they are not from same community. Knights for widow and orphan. To solve that pbI I opened a thread about weather report, so nothing bad happens, nothing. I always offer Op to delete my post if OP wants it , I indicated a newcomer how to mute , block, etc ... point was he needed one week to find the process.
The best are people to want someone to be blocked, and the op don't want.
Last think : RIRE Fun is part of mankind life.
Nobody laughs about a hat, but the onewho carries the hat on head. Demonstration with UK anytime.
That is the point: everywhere in the worldlaugh disappears, slowly but surely, compared to 30 years in my country, most of jokes would be prosecuted in TV, reson why they are only few subject : catholics never suit, they don't need it,President of Republic, we can say here anything about, no prosecution since de Gaulle, other people i would'nt suggest paf! Trial. Court, penalty!
To laugh or not to laugh, without trolling is an Art and here we have two masters Jamie and RoJoCo.

I swear, and he could'nt even succeed in blocking ...me, just incredible).

Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists
"Let's start by getting our definitions straight: An Internet troll is someone who comes into a discussion and posts comments designed to upset or disrupt the conversation. Often, in fact, it seems like there is no real purpose behind their comments except to upset everyone else involved. Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.
"What kind of person would do this? Some Canadian researchers decided to find out.
"They conducted two online studies with over 1,200 people, giving personality tests to each subject along with a survey about their Internet commenting behavior. They were looking for evidence that linked trolling with the "Dark Tetrad" of personality traits: narcissim, Machiavellianism, psychopthy, and sadism.
"They found that Dark Tetrad scores were highest among people who said trolling was their favorite Internet activity...
"Look at how low the Dark Tetrad scores are for everyone except the trolls! Their scores for all four traits soar on the chart. The relationship between trolling and the Dark Tetrad is so significant that the authors write in their paper:
"Trolls truly enjoy making you feel bad. To quote the authors once more (because this is a truly quotable article): "Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun ... and the Internet is their playground!""
