Is Smash Bros a Fighting Game?

A debate forum for the above question.

I think a slightly better title for this forum would have been  "Is Smash Bros considered to be a fighting game", or does should it go in the fighting game genre would be a bit more to the point, of course you already know my feelings on the matter.  I'll reiterate them here briefly for this new forum.  My opinion, and this is a question based solely on opinion and there is no right or wrong in opinion, is no, Smash Bros should not be considered a fighting game.

My reasoning is, in the traditional sense no, however, if the word "fight" is to be taken literal, then Smash Bros and many other titles would be considered "fighting" games, since there is a fight taking place between 2 or more players, since technically Smash Bros follows a PvP model.   In terms of the overall culture, history and tradition of fighting games such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters and there are countless others, then Smash Bros is not a fighting game and should not, in my opinion be compared to these games, or put in the same category as them.

I speak not of condescension to Smash Bros, as I have nothing against the game, I'm simply saying, it is it's own game, it's not trying to be a fighting game either, however there are those who feels it is a fighting game and that's totally fine.  I'm merely voicing my opinion or well restating my opinion since I knew about this post/forum before it was even posted.  happy.png

What is your definition of a fighting game?

I touched on this on the other post but again I'll reiterate.  A fighting game to me, is based off of a PVP model, which, in case ya'll don't know, this stands for player vs player.  A fighting game is all about pulling off, normal, special moves and combos to drain a person's health bar, usually based off some sort of martial arts, of course most of the "special" moves are fantasy, like throwing fireballs and the like, also the sprites/character models are much bigger.  This is what's come to be known as a "fighting game" in the traditional sense.  Smash Bros differs from this quite greatly doesn't it?  First of all, it can be a 4 player game (most fighting games are just 1v1), the special moves are very easy to pull off (most fighting games have button combinations for their special moves, such as a quarter circle forward and "DP" motions and that's just for the special moves, the combos are alot more complex) but I think one of the main differences and there are quite a few, but one of the main differences is the goal, in a fighting game, you're draining a person's health bar down to nothing, or in an extreme case (see the MK games) you're killing them.  Smash Bros is all about throwing someone off of a stage.  I don't mean any offense to anyone but it's seen as a kiddy type of game, as alot of Nintendo products are, I don't even know if it was meant to be taken seriously but yes I know, there are serious tournaments for it etc., you can't say the same about SF and especially MK, both were taken more seriously and obviously for an older crowd, again, no condescension, just being objective that's all, like I keep saying, I have nothing against Smash Bros, I just don't consider it a fighting game...in the traditional sense, as I outlined above.

BotW, if what was multiplayer, could fit your definition with its complex combat system.

Breath of the Wild? What's your meaning here? You asked me a question and I answered it, I hope the post wasn't too long for you and others, I'm an intellectual, thus, a very "wordy" person, if that bothers you, I can step away from this post and place my comments else where.

In BotW, there are plenty of weapons, with runes, actual weapons, enviromental hazards, Champion Abilities, horses, and techniques like the Flurry Rush. You can take out a Yiga Clan with a tree. It also has durability and a wide variety of weapons.

That is my take, at least. Also, Minecraft has PvP.

Alright but how would botw be remotely close to a fighting game? I'm not getting your meaning? or are u saying that it's more like Smash Bros?

I was saying that you could just use a sword on your foe, but you could also pull off something like using stasis on a bomb barrel. The idea of BotW being somewhat close to a fighting game was an idea I had one day, so feel free to have your own opnion (though you already formed one.)

I don't understand that logic, Breath of the Wild is a Zelda game?, this is nothing close to a fighting game, and it's not multiplayer so hmm, interesting logic.

I know this is a year-and-three-month necropost, but you let this guy dominate the argument?

Super Smash Bros. should absolutely be considered a fighting game. It's a game where two players play characters and fight them against each other until their opponent (or occasionally in the case of "platform fighters" akin to Smash Bros., opponents) lose, and they win. So it's a fighting game.

Also at the end it say “KO” and you only knock someone out by fighting them

Or in the case of Smash, "Game" or "Game Set" depending on region and installment.

InsanePig23456

Yeah it's surely a fighting game

This was a year old forum. How did ya'll find it?

BuzzleGuzzle

I was seeing if there were any other Melee players on chess.com, then I ran into this forum.

Make your own forum, lol. That might help you find some other people.
