I know this is a year-and-three-month necropost, but you let this guy dominate the argument?

Super Smash Bros. should absolutely be considered a fighting game. It's a game where two players play characters and fight them against each other until their opponent (or occasionally in the case of "platform fighters" akin to Smash Bros., opponents) lose, and they win. So it's a fighting game.

If you're talking about me then I'm not trying to dominate nothing, I probably know more about the culture then you do, and I doubt I'm not older then you. Smash Bros is not considered a "fighting game" for many reasons, which I'm not going to list here and honestly I've already listed some of them, you can scroll up and go back a few pages to read that comment, also, I'm sure you know how to use google, google is your best friend like they say, google the reasons why Smash isn't considered a fighting game, and you'll understand why most competitive gamers don't consider it a fighting game. However you can call it a fighting game if it makes you feel better, the majority of the community of competitive gamers don't consider Smash Bros a fighting game, it's a party game.
It's a niche thing, it's the same argument that I had with some guy in high school almost 30 years ago about how Zelda isn't an "rpg" and he argued that it was,.......

Yes, but that has nothing to do with why I don't consider Smash Bros a fighting game, it's not a nostalgia thing if that's what you think.

So what would smash bro be categorized as 42 cause if it’s not fighting I’m confused as what to put it under
Avatar of rooksb4

No, I was stating that you would have a different perspective because you grew up with actual fighting games.

I'd call it a party game but I just google it, it's called a "platformer fighter" which is ......I've never heard of that genre before but I guess.........
One main reason why I wouldn't consider Smash Bros a fighting game, is, despite the fact that a "fight" is going on, as in 2 or more (another reason why it's not a fighting game, most fighting games are of a PvP model) you're not trying to drain another person's health bar down, aside from maybe Soul Calibur, you don't win by throwing someone off the stage/screen or w/e the goal is in Smash Bros, there are other reasons, again.....Google is your best friend happy.png

lol gotcha but I did state it's not a nostalgia thing, as in me being biased towards Street Fighter being a "fighting game" and not Smash Bros, in a sense, I did grow up with Smash Bros, I had the N64 before most of you were born probably, and yes that's in 1996 for those who don't know. I'm old bro lol, the first Smash Bros came out for N64 and while I wasn't playing it, I know of it, and had friends that played it.

Is it a "I gotta win the debate" thing, there is nothing wrong with Smash Bros being a "party game", nothing wrong with that, just like if someone didn't consider Street Fighter a fighting game, I wouldn't care, it wouldn't change my feelings on it lol. I don't get why dudes would get upset that Smash Bros is not considered by many to be a "fighting game" lol ......

Listen, just because a game has some elements of a genre, doesn't mean it's part of the genre.

I kinda put it in the genre of like a battle royal deal cause only one can remain standing in the battles I play which are stock battles

It’s considered a “platform fighter,” and is very different from other fighting games. But I still think it should be considered a fighting game as the main mode of gameplay is in fact fighting between 2 or more people, using attacks specific to your character. And while Nintendo calls it a party game, the competitive scene for Smash Bros is massive, bigger than a lot of other fighting games. So I would think that it should be considered a fighting game.

Smash is a game where you go online, find some people and screw around by spamming crouch, shield, and taunts

You make a compelling case but I think it's more a gaming culture type of thing. I remember back in high school having a similar argument with someone, I was telling him that the "Zelda" games weren't "jrpgs", of course he argued otherwise, this was almost 30 years ago (I'm old lol). I still feel the same way today, for the same reasons I don't feel that Smash Bros is a "fighting game", it's own creators, in this case, Nintendo, don't even consider it a fighting game, I mean that should tell you something right there.
However, as you said, you do "fight" to get the other person off of the screen, but that's my point, it's all about the history and culture of the genre, Zelda isn't and never will be considered an "rpg", the term "jrpg" didn't exist back then, of course the J stands for Japanese, but again, even that, is differentiating standard "rpgs" from a certain niche type of games that has certain gameplay mechanics and/or elements to them that other games for the most part don't.
For example, a fighting game, is usually 2D, or at least started out 2D and the whole idea was to drain the other person's health bar via punches, kicks combined with "special" attacks, usually done by what's known as "command" or well input motions. There are other things as well but that's the main idea, if you look at Smash Bros, the goal is totally different, there aren't any real commands or combos, it shouldn't be put into them same genre as something like Street Fighter, which imho is the granddaddy of mostly all fighting games, 2D or otherwise.
I mean this is just the general consensus of the community, I'm js. Like I said earlier, I don't understand why people take it personally and get upset about it lol, but it happens all the time on "social media" and then you wonder why I'm not on FB as often as I used to be.
