Don't look at me. Brian said it.

the only thing we know for certain is that your mom is very round

She just fractured her wrist after a fall.  Guessing it's more age than roundness.

Sorry, Rogan was the only one making any sense in that conversation, lol...

String theory says no

just to clarify, this isn't clickbait about flat earth.  it's about space and the universe.

but probably same difference to most of us here ...

I kept listening to that Brian dude, and the only thought that kept going through my mind was, "I hope he doesn't have a driver's license, cause I'd hate to be anywhere near him on the highway."

Doesn’t matter curve spacetime?

Avatar of HiramoniBasak

The exact shape is still a matter of debate in physical cosmology, but experimental data from various independent sources (WMAP, BOOMERanG, and Planck for example) confirm that the universe is flat with only a 0.4% margin of error.

Again, what about the curvature of spacetime? If spacetime is curved, then the universe must be curved.

A flat universe raises the question about the edge of the universe, so a curved universe makes more sense, in a way.

Always good to quote your sources when repeating verbatim to avoid charges of plagiarism.

I think I understand why they say the universe is flat. Brian was talking about slicing the universe into layers with each layer being an instantaneous point in time. I think he and Neil meant that the total amount of energy in each slice equals zero if the universe is flat. If the universe is not flat then there would be a positive or negative balance to the total existing energy of the universe. Apparently, all our measurements come up with a zero sum for the amount of energy in the universe.

"What does it mean to say that something is flat?

If you're in a square room and walk around the corners, you'll return to your starting point having made four 90-degree turns. You can say that your room is flat. This is Euclidian geometry.

But if you make the same journey on the surface of the Earth. Start at the equator, make a 90-degree turn, walk up to the North Pole, make another 90-degree turn, return to the equator, another 90-degree turn and return to your starting point.

In one situation, you made four turns to return to your starting point, in another situation it only took 3. That's because the topology of the surface you were walking on decided what happens when you take a 90-degree turn.

:

Now, what about the universe itself? You can imagine that same analogy. Imaging flying out into space on a rocket for billions of light-years, performing 90-degree maneuvers and returning to your starting point.

You can't do it in three, or five, you need four, which means that the topology of the universe is flat."
