I didn’t see his interview but vaguely remember that from a small biography I read on him. I wasn’t sure if it was true because it also said that as a child (after he lost his sight) he would climb on the roof of the house and jump onto the roof of the building or house nearby.

I can't remember who the interviewer was - maybe Mike Wallace? Anyway, they started playing a game on Ray's pegboard set. They make a few moves, then Mike makes some remark asking if he can see the threat of Mike's last move. Ray quickly replied, "I'm blind, but not *that* blind!"
I should’ve kept that book, I’ve never read that about him anywhere else. Even now, looking over a google search I didn’t see anything about it (the roof jumping that is). I did see that one of his chess sets is in the Smithsonian.
Ray Charles could actually play chess. Did you ever see the 60 Minutes interview?
No kidding... nice! My Brother long time ago was one of the bout two dozen children sitting outside around him playing a piano some wonderful songs by him, mid 80s or later... He's quite a cool individual, rather loving.
Lol
