INTRODUCTION
I've noticed over my span of this account a new "era" of KOTLs are emerging from the masses, a good one being KOTL: Death and Destruction. I've also seen many new players wondering what in the heck a KOTL is. Now, i'll admit, some are either really well effort kotls or just comment grabs. So today on Toxic's Dumb Forums (TDF) I will explain what a kotl is. Note, I will not be going into detail about mechanics or every kotl's timestamps (the official club does this), I will be covering just the important stuff.
BASICS
King Of The Ladder, also known as KOTL, is a forum game made by @HorribleTomato in 2018. It consisted of a few players participating in a Dungeons and Dragons like game, just without all the dice rolling and stat stuff. It allowed players to do as they pleased, like a human would. The game also was point based, granting the players points based on what they did, like escape the prison they are trapped in or kill another player. The main goal was to beat the minigame given (KOTL is the main game, the minigames are how you score points.) . The minigame differed every time, like it could be a battle royal one round and a team-based mingame the next. And whoever scored the most points in a season (Think of sport seasons here) won. The player was restricted to reality (You couldn't run without your legs missing, for example.), being able to do what a human could. There would also be weapons in the game, like guns and swords and all that fun stuff. It also was time based, for example, if Jimmy attacked Billy, Billy had 24 hours to respond or he'd get hit. (The club describes the time based mechanics in better detail.) There is also "tricks" which were like special weapons and powerups. This allowed the player to extend their capabilities a bit beyond reality. I almost forgot to mention, but all actions performed by the player are decided if they can be performed by the person running the KOTL (also known as a mod.) The players play on a map, given by the mod before the game starts. There also rules, like how much coins a enemy drops or how the game works in general.
EXAMPLES OF MINIGAMES
Minigames can vary from KOTL to KOTL, but there are many used ones like:
Battle Royal: Last one alive wins the game.
Gold Rush: first person to obtain a set number of gold wins.
Murder Mystery: Find the killer, or be killed. The innocent must kill or outlive the killer. The killer must kill everyone. The roles for the players are given out via DM.
Escape Game: It's a race for players to escape the map. The first one to escape gets the most points.
Those were all the used ones I could remember.
OTHER STUFF TO KNOW
THIS GAME CAN AND WILL TEST YOUR WITS.
ANYTHING YOU DO CAN CHANGE THE TIDES OF THE WHOLE GAME.
that's about it in this "paragraph".
CONCLUSION
I've been on this website since 2019 ( I've had many, closed accounts (self closed) ) and this game can be tons of fun if the mod knows what they are doing. Again, the official club goes into the details of the game in much, much better detail than I did, but I felt like it was somewhat useful to post something beginners can read to get a simple concept of the game. One of the biggest forums on this website, was a kotl ran by @HorribleTomato. I also have one, with 10k+ posts. (It was made from my first account but i've tried dearly to keep it running.) So yeah, I hope you found this helpful.
