I'm not sure what is available in India, but I recently purchased a refurbished dell XPS1330 for $800. The standard battery last about 4 hours for text editing and web surfing with my configuration. Its small, light, fast enough for most things you would need a laptop for. Mine doesn't have a webcam but most do. The sound from the speakers is not the best, but the headphone jack sounds great. Dell has been putting out 15-20% off coupons for their refurbished stuff as well.

I shall be buying a laptop in the next 3-4 months and am searching for an appropriate laptop. I am a grad student..and am I want a no-frills laptop in the $1000-1500 range...I hardly ever play games so I dont think I need any graphics card..but I think I would prefer a good audio, visual system with web cam preferably..since I am on VOIP with a couple of my friends frequently...And hopefully the lappy would be light too..
Do you guys have any suggestions....
