Ben's main power is his control of carbon in an object, especially his own skin and body. Mason is severly injured during his fight with Jess which enables Ben to take control and force Mason out of
his body. With Mason killed, and Bens body injured severly one of Masons" associates" stabs Jess, ending her life, while giving her time to say her last words to Bryan. Ben sacrifices himself for his sisters sake giving her the little bit of life and vitality he has left.
