I smoked heavily from 11 to 30. And I failed at quitting many times before I succeeded. I don't think the 'how' is as important as really, really wanting it and truly being ready to quit. Every time you 'quit' make sure you do better than last time. Every time you start again make sure it's for less time than before. Until you 'quit' again.

What finally worked for me was the patch, if anyone wants to know how it went just ask. But I think that when you're truly ready, any of those stop smoking aids can make it a bit easier. If you're not truly ready, nothing is going to make it happen. So I guess the secret is the same secret to most things worth doing....NEVER GIVE UP!

In the immortal words of Thomas Beckett,

"Try again,

 fail again,

 fail better."

RonaldJosephCote

     Your ABSOLUTELY right Regi.

It's tobacco, just stop for gods sake, millions of people do it all the time, what a bunch of drama queens!

Kevinum

Oy! It does no good to your health, smoking, so a lot better to quit.

RJC, good job. Doing it gradually I think works better than going cold turkey, unless you're pretty determined with a lot of willpower.

Its about re-programing the brain to different habits, routines, schedules, etc.  I slipped todayEmbarassed  Its not even midnight and I had 10 already. I'll probably have one more before I go to bed. I was shooting for 7 his week but,.....  (I'm not disagreeing with you Dan, that was also for Tragg)

I'm also a former Navy, SpecWar guy...three tours in Viet Nam. So, it 'ain't' just about quitting. It is far easier to come off of heroine than cigarettes.

Which units and stations in country? UDT/SEAL, River Rats???

Trag55

I smoked for 30 years, if I could stop by throwing away the packet so can anyone, if you want something badly enough just do it!

""Me" : today 37 days without one cigarette!"  Good for you MarcoSmile Your not only making yourself a better person, your making the planet a better place.  BRAVO.

NomaticKnight;   No disrespect intended because I'm familiar with your law enforcement background but, instead of asking about Pawn_Pusher_Dan's background, consider this an invite to join Dan's group; (that is, if your ex-military).         http://www.chess.com/groups/home/us-military-veterans-and-those-near-and-dear   I'm sure you'll find a lot of good people like yourself with common law enforcement backgrounds.Smile

I haven't had a cigarette today........ Mind you, I don't smoke.

That's the best way to stop smoking though....

I don't smoke either.

I finally quit smoking by catergorizing my need for a cigarette into two groups: habit and addiction.

Habit one's were when I'd automatically light up on the phone, or with a coffee, getting into the car, etc... Addiction ones were when I had to have a smoke or die.

I managed to cut out most of the habit ones, and in doing that, reduced my addiction. I was then able to quit fully after about two months.

Never felt like a smoke since. This was over ten years ago.

Now THAT sounds like something I should tryUndecided   Habit & AddictionSurprised  Thanks!

Tried one forever ago but didn't care for it, didn't really see what all the fuss was about.  Now you give me a cigar and a nice glass of bourbon and we'll talk...

I was just asking it as a brief question, not to join a group or something. I wasn't even a glint in my father's eye when he served in Vietnam, but during my teenage years I absolutely ripped through the book store shelves on anything Vietnam and/or Navy SEAL related, then it carried on into all other aspects of that war. I became a self-taught Vietnam historian of sorts. So I am simply curious what his station was. IV Corps? Can Tho? UDT/SEAL or working with them on a "River Rat" boat? That sort of thing. Wink Just a brief reply from him (as he made the comment that he was NavSpecWar), and not joining a group, would suffice Smile

So how goes the journey into "non-smoke-a-tude" Ronald? Change to light cigs, cut down more? We're rooting for you!

RonaldJosephCote

No progress to report.Embarassed  I've been stuck at 9 cigs a day for about 2 weeks now.

1. Cut half an inch off every one before you smoke it.

2. That'll reduce the amount you smoke.

3. Repeat step one. Smile
