I have an opinion question for you experienced RPG'ers. What would be a good introductory RPG for someone who's never played an RPG and isn't sure whether he'd like playing RPGs? (So, I guess nothing overly complicated.)

I have older hardware (Win 7, DOS, or Linux) with an Intel i3 cpu and no dedicated gpu, so I guess this rules out most recent bleeding edge RPGs. I don't mind playing older RPGs, in fact, I might prefer it. (I've even dabbled a bit into text adventure games like the Infocom games of the 80s.)

Fallout New Vegas for sure. One of my favorite games of all time, not just among rpgs

play the first fallout or the first skyrim.

I'm jotting down all of the suggestions. Not sure about Vegas, since I don't want to possibly stress out my hardware. The first fallout (1997?) looks like a good candidate. I searched for skyrim and got hits on "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim". Is this what you were thinking of, or is it something else?

Geez, I'm looking through all the flavors of Elder Scrolls - somewhat overwhelming. It might take me a while to sort it out, lol.

are graphics important to you?

to just learn the ins and outs of RPG any one will do.  the concept of RPG started with Dungeons and Dragons many moons ago

So any of the early Elder Scrolls? Are there any clunkers to avoid?

Well, like I said, my PC doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, so the graphics can't be very demanding. As far as my likes, I'm not too particular about graphics, except that I know I don't like CGA or Hercules. :-)

Well, I thought I had a good choice for my first RPG: The Keys to Maramon, circa 1990. It's a cutdown version of the Magic Candle series; a single player version for novices.  It sounded good until I read a detailed review from the CRPG Addict. Now it sounds like cr@p, lol.

I'll keep looking; I'm in no hurry to decide. I want to choose wisely due to the huge amount of time that these games require. I'll keep the Elder Scrolls series on my candidate list.

BTW, I don't particularly care for FPSs and lots of shooting and killing. I'm more drawn to adventure/puzzle stuff.

Hard to find an RPG that doesn't involve FPS activities but you can concentrate on building in fallout 4 for example and never touch a weapon (much) .  I actually prefer older style weapons like in Elder scrolls.  Mostly one on one fights with swords etc not mass killing like in Fallout.

I never thought Fallout as an RPG because it had guns and such. I always think an RPG has medieval weapons or something.
